Russia vs. Georgia: This Could Go On For Awhile

...So I heard on BBC news last night, that President Sarkozy (of France) had been able to get both Russia and Georgia to agree to a ceasefire in South Ossetia. I felt a sense of relief... but then this morning I heard, that Russia is now in Gori, so the alleged ceasefire may not be as effective as it had at first sounded it would. I did feel a sense of anxiety, upon hearing that Russia had exercised military force in the region; having remembered the tail-end of the Cold War, my sentiment was just a knee-jerk reaction to the news. Now with this current conflict, it looks as though American-Russian relations are once again going to 'head south'. You know, every Russian I have met here on home territory has impressed me with their graciousness and respect; that's why I find it hard to understand, why the Russian government continues to refuse to play fair ball in world political matters. We will always hope for a peaceful resolution with Russia - but Russia has to learn to 'play fair ball' with the rest of us, or there will be no game. Oh where is that talented ballet dancer Barishnikov when we really need him?? :)

When I first heard about this, I was thinking, Man, I'm so gonna start worrying when the Russians reach Atlanta. Oh. Never mind.

Thank you both for the thoughtful comments - hope all is going well. We'll just have to see how this conflict plays out in the coming months... but knowing how Russia operates, it could be more like years! I concur with you, Mr. Hippie, that US-Russian relations were never strong to begin with. Much improvement needed in this area!
