I Think Scottish Accents Are Really Far-Out

A couple of nights ago I was listening to BBC news; they were doing a report on youth in Scotland that are incarcerated for minor or major crimes. They interviewed a few of the men in the prison; I tried to follow what they were saying but you know what - it really wasn't easy!! They pronounce their words (especially their vowels) very differently from Americans (or even Brits, for that matter); I could get some of the words, but others just 'flew over my head' and I could not understand what they were saying. I know they were speaking in English... but their English is so different-sounding that I only got about 50% of the words. I wonder how well the interviewer (she had an unusual name) understood them as well... I found it tough to understand them!
